What’s been your ultimate meal to date?
Dinner at Villa Gallici in Aix en Provence during my honeymoon. Don’t ask me exactly what we ate but the outdoor setting, the service and quality of the presentation made it the best meal ever.
Any comical kitchen failures?
Brioche that looked like dog turds. Really.
What would your last meal be?
I’d like to go to Oustau de Baumaniere in Les Baux de Provence. It’s a five star hotel/restaurant in a dramatic setting.
Who is your favourite celeb chef and why?
None really but it wouldn’t be politic to give you a list of celeb chefs I find annoying. We have so much food telly but very little of it actually teaches us anything useful about cooking – Xanthe Clay wrote a piece about this in the Telegraph last week and I think there was a lot of truth in it. I agreed with her that Raymond Blanc’s show was a rare exception. 90% of our food TV is dumbed down rubbish like Come Dine With Me, or else it’s a publicity machine to sell books. Masterchef is just X Factor with gas rings. The whole format of the reality shows or celeb chef in an immaculate kitchen is so tired now.
Do you have a favourite food writer and why?
I love Rose Prince’s books as they’re very much pitched at the family home cook rather than any pretentious cheffy nonsense. Her books are very much about the writing rather than the pictures which makes it a strange choice for me as I’m usually attracted to very visual material.
How has food blogging changed your life?
It’s given me something I can work on at home and brought me a book deal which I never imagined 3 years ago.
What’s your favourite part of the food blogging process? And the most negative?
PRs saying “the client has no budget for that” and I’m like “Hello… they’re paying YOU aren’t they?” Brands have massive budgets for growing their social media presence and bloggers should get more of it.
Which other food bloggers do you follow most closely?
This is a terribly difficult question. There are 200 sites in my RSS reader and I dip in and out of all of them. I avoid the “star bloggers” though as few of them give anything back.
Where do you get inspiration from?
I have a giant stash of magazines that eclipses the book pile but in truth, it’s the internet where I look the most.
Future aspirations for the blog?
I am never satisfied with the design, the layout. I feel I’m permanently rebuilding my site.
