Welcome back #FBC12 alumni Manjiri from Slice off Me

#FBC12 alumni Manjiri (@manjirichitnis) of Slice Off Me enjoyed her day at #FBC12 so much that she was eager to sign up for all three days of this year’s #FBC5!  She tells us what she’s looking forward to this year.

What are you most looking forward to about #FBC5?

Looking forward to attending the entire 3 day event this year, I was able to attend only the last day of FBC 2012.Its a great opportunity to connect with fellow food bloggers from across the globe, such an intermingling of cultures & thoughts, an opportunity not to be missed, to get tips on writing, SEO, monetising, photopgraphy and of course to eat yummy food!

What motivated you to blog about food and how has food blogging changed your life?

I was new to London and on a sabbatical from a hectic 10 year nonstop full time work life back in India, so I started experimenting in the kitchen and thought a blog was a great way to share and connect with like minded people online. I come from a family of foodies and I love experimenting with food, I cannot get enough of London’s farmers markets, am addicted to watching several shows on telly about food and travel. Blogging helped me channelise my thoughts and dive in deeper into the amazing online universe of cultures, ideas. Food and travel are great conversation starters in any part of the world! I do have a lot of ideas for my blog and hope to put them in place soon. In that sense, my blog has shown me a fabulously fun way to do something different and fulfilling!

Do you blog full time or, if not, what’s your day job? What does your family think of your blog?

I would love to blog full time but have recently started working full time in Marketing and hence I do try and blog when I can, but am guilty of having so many articles in my drafts folder that have yet to see the light of the day 🙂 My husband is very supportive and encouraging and loves accompanying me on my foodie adventures even though at times it may just turn out to be a tiring trudge through a maze of supermarket aisles!

What are your future aspirations for the blog? From where do you get inspiration and who taught you to cook?

I would love to blog full time but have recently started working full time in Marketing and hence I do try and blog when I can, but am guilty of having so many articles in my drafts folder that have yet to see the light of the day 🙂 My husband is very supportive and encouraging and loves accompanying me on my foodie adventures even though at times it may just turn out to be a tiring trudge through a maze of supermarket aisles!

Which other food bloggers do you follow most closely? Tell us something you learned from reading blogs you probably wouldn’t know otherwise?

I love reading several food blogs, they inspire me to experiment, create and relish food, to name a few -Eat like a Girl, Cook Sister, Pukka Paki, Cooking with Siri, Show me the curry. It’s amazing how we can connect with people all over the world and the way bloggers take us on a journey with their wonderous tales of food, places and their lives.

What’s your favourite/least favourite food? What’s been your ultimate meal to date? And what would your last meal be?

My favourite food is seafood made with homemade marinades and fresh coconut to season it with and my last meal would be a spicy prawn curry with rice and some fried Pomfret by the side, washed down with a glass of chilled white wine. My ultimate meal has been my wedding lunch which was a vegetarian affair and the crispy okra dish was a passport to food heaven in one bite!

How many cookbooks do you own? Who is your favourite celebrity chef and and who is your favourite food writer? Why?

I have honestly lost count and I do plan to get as many as I can to London and hope that I can keep adding more gems to my collection over time, the one book I treasure the most is a hand me down from my mum which has some very simple and traditional Indian(Maharashtrian community espp) recipes especially sea food ones which I love! My 2 favourite chefs are Sanjeev Kapoor – this handsome, dimpled Indian chef whose shows I used to love watching with my mum and the charming, boyish Jamie Oliver. I love Jamie’s books too and can’t resist buying his books because Jamie Oliver’s infectious enthusiasm, passion for creating great food and the way he is always brimming with ideas to do so many different things is maddeningly inspiring!

What’s your signature dish? If you want us to feature your favourite recipe from your own blog, include the link here!

I love cooking sea food and mutton curry and yet, without doubt it has to be prawn pilaf cooked using my mother in laws hand me down recipe, it takes me back to some of the happiest times of my life!

Do you have a favourite kitchen tool/appliance? What’s the hottest item on your shopping list?

It may sound cliched but I am mad about knives and stargely enough though I have amassed many over the years my fav is this old one with a bent handle which is a rather unlikely part of my collection as it was something I procured with great difficulty from a street food vendor in Mumbai,it is a mean chopping tool and I cannot imagine finely slicing an onion without it ! I dream of fancy kitchen gadgets and will treat myself to some when I don’t feel so poor !It may sound clichéd but I am mad about knives and strangely enough though I have amassed many over the years my fav is this old one with a bent handle which is a rather unlikely part of my collection as it was something I procured with great difficulty from a street food vendor in Mumbai, it is a ‘’mean’’ chopping tool and I cannot imagine finely slicing an onion without it! An iteresting discussion is woorth comment.
There’sno doubt that that you need to publish more about this topic, it
may not be a taboo subject but typically people don’t discuss such subjects.
    To the next! Many thanks!!
