Mary-Denise Smith (@mdwordsmith) plays with her food in a variety of ways. Always interested in historic foodways, she worked at living history museums in the American Midwest, South and Northeast. She cooked for wildlands firefighters in Northern California one summer, and worked on shrimp boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Mary-Denise worked hard to stay out of the restaurant trade, with great success – making it through grad school without having to wait tables or sling hash.
Mary-Denise collects antique cooking tools, and sometimes uses them. Last summer she adapted her barbeque so she could use the rotisserie and her hearth cooking utensils. She recently thinned her cookbook collection down to a few hundred volumes, evenly divided between antique, vintage and really cool new titles. She has begun collecting books on foodwriting, and now requires more bookshelves.
Mary-Denise owns the copyediting and proofreading business mdWordsmith, specializing in cookbooks and other forms of food writing.
