Food Blogger Connect, celebrating its fifth anniversary this July, might already be the world’s leading international food blogging conference with attendees travelling to London each year from around the globe. Now, however, we’re delighted to announce that we’re spreading our wings around the world too. We’re hitting the sun and flying out to Dubai for an #FBCdxb Roaming Workshop Weekend!
The two-day event taking place the 4th and 5th of October 2013 will bring bloggers and industry professionals together in one of the hottest cities for food in the world, with plenty of chance to top up the tan as well.
With renowned food writer, Dianne Jacob, hosting her Pen to Paper Writing Workshop and award-winning food photographer Ellen Silverman and writer Martha Holmberg holding their Photography, Styling & Recipe Workshop, it promises to really help make your work as engaging as possible.
Friday 4th October 2013
Pen to Paper Writing Workshop. Instructor Dianne Jacob, a veteran of newspapers, magazines, interactive books, and now in her fifth year as a blogger, explores myriad ways to write well and get published. If you love to write, dream of being published, or if you’re already on the road and have new goals to push yourself further with a book, this is the class for you.
In the morning sessions, Dianne will focus on technique and craftsmanship. You’ll read examples from the best writers of our time, and try your hand at exercises focused on the senses, personal essay, and self editing, all designed to strengthen your writing immediately.
After lunch, we’ll move to the professional side of writing, covering freelance writing and book publishing. An interactive classroom style will make the time fly by as we explore the techniques of several successful bloggers, and the industry side of publishing and what editors want.
Designed to bring your simmering creativity and style to a boil, this class will lead you through your own creative process with tons of practical information from an editor and writing coach who has overseen and written award-winning publications. Martha Holmberg, author of several cookbooks, will be a special drop-in guest in the afternoon, as we move on to cookbooks and recipe writing.
Instructor Dianne Jacob (@diannej) is the author of Will Write for Food: The Complete Guide to Writing Cookbooks, Blogs, Reviews, Memoir, and More, which has sold close to 30,000 copies. She has also co-authored a cookbook, was the top editor for two international magazines in the US, and has edited books for publishing houses.
Saturday 5th October 2013
The Elements of Visual Storytelling. Veterans of the food publishing world, photographer Ellen Silverman and food writer Martha Holmberg (who are also best friends!) team up to share their methods and insights for crafting engaging and beautiful stories. Through demonstrations, interactive exercises, non-intimidating critiques, and lively discussion, students will learn to connect words and visuals in a way that effectively shares information while expressing their unique voice and point of view.
In this multi-part session, they will show you how to strengthen your distinctive style by integrating words and images more effectively. They’ll start the day with photo foundation work, including simple shooting exercises to improve your command of lighting, camera angles, and depth of field choices. Next, they’ll focus on defining and expressing your voice, through the choice of props, color palettes, and image composition. You’ll engage in fun, non-intimidating writing exercises and hands-on propping and shooting.
The last portion of the storytelling class will explore how to make technique and how-to shots as beautiful as they are informative, by discussing which recipe elements to shoot, how to handle backgrounds, depth of field, close ups, and how to write corresponding captions that support but don’t duplicate the visuals.
In the last class of the day, Writing a Recipe That Works, Martha Holmberg will share her methods for capturing a recipe as she develops it, writing the strongest recipe possible, and testing it with you, so your readers will love it as much as you do.
Instructor Ellen Silverman (@EllenSPhoto) is a freelance photographer who lives and works in New York City. Her primary focus is food photography. She has photographed over 25 cookbooks including Gwyneth Paltrow’s “My Father’s Daughter”, Daphne Oz’s upcoming book, Sally Swift and Lynne Rossetto Kasper’s “The Splendid Table Cookbook”, Kurt Guttenbruner’s “Neue Cuisine”, and Mindy Fox’s just released, “Salads: Beyond the Bowl” to name a few. She also shoots for many editorial clients such as La Cucina Italia, Country Living and Sweet Paul, and more. Her work can be viewed at: http://www.ellensilverman.
Instructor Martha Holmberg (@marthaholmberg) is a food editor, author, writer, and communications consultant. She is also the communications and content director of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) and was the editor-in-chief of Fine Cooking magazine for 11 years.
Hosted at the Archive, a fantastic arts space located in the heart of Safa Park, near the entrance of Gate 5, it’s outside surroundings are perfect for photography and writing, taking advantage of the beautiful landscape of the park in a dynamic and natural space. In a Middle Eastern city where people of various cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities come together seamlessly in a most modern and interconnected way, The Archive Dubai provides the perfect backdrop.
Additionally, each day will include food and beverage tastings during the breaks and hosted evenings for all attendees.
Experience traditional Chinese decadence on Saturday evening with a celebratory hands-on dinner at Hakkasan, one of Dubai’s most famous and acclaimed restaurants! Located in Dubai, London Hanway Place, London Mayfair, Miami, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, New York and San Francisco, the name is a combination of the Chinese dialect Hakka and the Japanese form of addressing someone, San, and was conceptualised by Alan Yau, the man behind other ground-breaking restaurants such as Wagamama, Yauatcha and Busaba Eathai.
Hakkasan opened to critical acclaim, achieving a Michelin star in 2003, and was the only Chinese restaurant in Europe to receive such an accolade that year. Hakkasan London Mayfair was also awarded a Michelin star for 2012. For further details, please visit www.hakkasan.com.
With 20 spaces available, the FBC Dubai Roaming Workshop is open to photographers, stylists, writers, book authors, journalists, publishers, industry professionals, hobby or accomplished bloggers, the curious enthusiasts looking to learn even more for their own satisfaction or professionally and want to meet some like-minded people.
