Alison Bolus (@AlisonBolus) has worked as a copy editor and proof reader in publishing for 30 years, initially on books on archaeology, ancient history, gardening, DIY and crafts and then for over a decade on cook books.
She has worked for Conran Octopus, Mitchell Beazley, Hamlyn, Duncan Baird, CICO, Watkins, Jacqui Small, and others. She has edited cook books on pretty well every aspect of cooking, with authors including Mich Turner (the queen of cake making and decorating), Hannah Miles (a Masterchef runner-up), Lord Tebbit, Penny Stanway and a certain Bethany Kehdy…!
Alison Bolus is speaking at #FBC5 about being a “Savvy Reciperanteur and Writing Memorable Recipes that Work”
Alison is all too aware of the pitfalls of poorly written recipes and is sure that everyone has had a bad experience or two: ingredients that are listed but not used or used but not listed; ingredients that are used in the wrong order; methods that involve doing something that takes only 10 minutes “meanwhile” doing something else that takes 20 minutes; a cooking time of 15 minutes that in reality takes only 10 minutes; “vegetarian” recipes that contain chicken; “beef” recipes that actually use pork…and so on and so on… Making sure that recipes are accurate and easy to follow is Alison’s job, how ever long it takes. Bethany will confirm that some recipes seem to take a long time to get right…but we get there in the end!
