I’m excited to learn new skills and also to make new contacts.

Is blogging your full time job? If not, what is your day job? 

I’m a freelance writer, brand ambassador, recipe developer and blogger. My blog isn’t exclusively about food, I also cover family, travel and style. The things I enjoy outside the blog are the things I blog about so the line between blog and life is often very blurred!

What first motivated you to blog and how has blogging changed your life?

I launched The 21st Century Housewife blog way back in 2002 and have been blogging every since. I relaunched as AprilJHarris.com about a year ago as the blog has evolved into a family, travel, food and style blog. It has grown along with my family and evolved as our life has evolved. I’m lucky to travel about 3 months out of every year so I’d have to say that my life and travels inspire my blog posts. I am working on my first book and also look forward to doing more video work.

What’s your signature dish?

After 13 years of blogging it would be hard to pick just one signature dish! My Chocolate and Blueberry Pudding Cake is one of the most recent.

Which other bloggers do you follow most closely? 

After 13 years I’ve followed a lot of blogs! In terms of food blogs, I’m a huge fan of GIRLI CHEF and JOY THE BAKER

How do you shop for food – supermarkets, farmer market, local shops, online etc? 

I am utterly passionate about fresh, local foods. I try to shop as much as possible at small local shops and will only buy meat from my local butcher. Having said that, I’m also incredibly concerned about the amount of meat we all eat and am including a lot more vegetarian and vegan recipes on my blog.

How many cookbooks do you own? Which cookbook do you return to time and time again?

I have well over a hundred cookbooks, most of which I read like novels. I am inspired most by Nigella Lawson, Ree Drummond, Ina Garten and The Pollan Family.

Does the proliferation of food programmes on TV aid or hinder your quest to develop and sustain a food blog?  im-going-to

I love TV food programmes but rarely have time to watch them. And while I love The Great British Bake Off, I worry that it will make people think their baked goods have to be perfect to be acceptable!

Do you have a favourite kitchen tool or appliance – either a new addition or a trusted old favourite?  What’s on your wish-list right now? 

I wouldn’t be without my Kitchen-Aid stand mixer. I’m definitely in the market for a VitaMix though!

To achieve a successful blog what comes first – the dishes, the styling, the photography or the words?

For me, it’s always the words that come first as I was a writer before I was a recipe developer. The photographs and styling are undeniably important but when I’m reading a blog post, I always look at the text first!
